Home Hemodialysis - Northern Alberta Renal Program (NARP)

Home Hemodialysis is a method of treating chronic kidney failure. It is a self-care treatment done in the home by the patient. It allows you the freedom and flexibility to schedule your own treatment time, stay at home, and be more actively involved in your care.
Home Hemodialysis is done by the patient in the home and offers greater independence and an increased sense of well-being. Patients receive six weeks training at the Aberhart site and return home to perform their own dialysis. Home Hemodialysis is a gentler method of dialysis because blood flow and dialysate flow are slower. Extra fluid is removed more gradually over a longer period of time. It offers more dialysis than can be offered in a hospital setting. The usual dialysis schedule is six to eight hours, six nights per week. Patients may choose nocturnal at night while they sleep, short daily, or conventional hemodialysis.
Who can benefit from Home Hemodialysis: patients who drive a long distance to their dialysis treatments; patients who are finding it difficult to continue working because of their dialysis schedule; and patients who are motivated and want more involvement in their care.
